For a century, Thunderhawk has carved its legend into the Pennsylvania skyline, a wooden titan that has thrilled generations at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown and beyond. Born in 1924 as “The Coaster”, this historic ride stands as the oldest operating roller coaster in the Cedar Fair chain and one of the last roaring relics of the golden age of amusement parks. Designed by Herbert Paul Schmeck and crafted by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, it has stood the test of time, delivering heart-pounding excitement across generations.

When it first opened on March 30, 1924, locals simply called it “The Coaster” or “the yellow roller coaster”, a beacon of thrills in an era when roller coasters were still a daring new frontier. In 1989, it took on its now-iconic name—Thunderhawk—a fitting title for a ride that streaks through the park with the force of a storm.
Originally built as a classic out-and-back coaster, its layout was transformed in 1930, adding a figure-eight twister section that introduced a new level of relentless speed and unpredictable turns. Riders since then have gripped their seats as Thunderhawk’s wooden structure creaks and roars, a symphony of thrills that echoes through the decades.

Over time, Thunderhawk has evolved while staying true to its roots. In 2016, it underwent a major restoration, unveiling sleek new open-air trains by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, a pristine white paint job reminiscent of its early days, and a dazzling white lighting package that outlines its timeless silhouette against the night sky.
Its legacy was forever enshrined in 2021, when the American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) honored it with an ACE Coaster Landmark plaque, solidifying its place in roller coaster history.
From Allentown and beyond, Thunderhawk has captured the hearts of thrill-seekers for generations. Whether it’s the first ride of a fearless child, a nostalgic return for longtime fans, or a bucket-list experience for coaster enthusiasts, Thunderhawk remains a rite of passage—a living legend that continues to defy time and gravity, one exhilarating ride at a time.
