Hickory, dickory, dock, where is the clock?

Return to Historical Articles

There was a once proud Grecian front on the century-old Berks County courthouse and a historic clock in its steeple. The Goddess of Justice looked over the city from her lofty perch.

All this was before the 22-story skyscraper was erected on the present site.

Nobody seems certain just where the clock is today. True, it was fickle. Many a day the ancient timepiece refused to function. But no one knows where it is now.

Some parts of it went to Miles Dechant, who was the architect for the new courthouse. The faces were kicked around the old home of the Historical Society, where the judges' quarters were maintained while the rebuilding was going on. Later on it was sent away. Somewhere.
